Ripley Aldermen vote to clean up property

RIPLEY – Ripley’s mayor and aldermen took care of the following items of business during their Aug. 3 meeting Tuesday night.

The mayor and board:

--Voted to buy a radio advertising package at a cost of $499 from Phillip Wilson, representing The Shark. Wilson said the spots will air as the station broadcasts Ripley High School football games this fall.

--Held a public hearing on James Beavers’ property at 408 Hazel Road. Aldermen determined the land needed to be cleaned up, and voted to do so and charge the costs to Beavers. The costs become a lien on the property, and must be satisfied before the land can be transferred.

--Awarded a bid of $800,290.24 from T. J. Construction, Inc., of Florence, Ala., for relocating utilities on Miss. 15 in connection with the forthcoming highway work. The bid was the lowest of four received.

--Conveyed an alley off Nance Street. The land involved is .070 by .058 acre.

--Agreed to hire Brent Garner as a police officer. Garner is not certified. He begins work for the city later this month and begins his basic police certification training Monday, Sept. 13.

--Agreed to advertise for a police officer.

--Approved purchasing a $110 advertisement in the Ripley High School Football Boosters Media Guide.

--Approved paying $50 to renew the signs at the Ripley Middle School gym.

--Approved paying $125 for a half-page advertisement in the Blue Mountain College Highlander.

--Approved paying $440 for a back to school advertisement in the Southern Sentinel.

--Approved renewing liability insurance with Ripley Insurance Agency.

--Approved paying tuition assistance – along with Tippah County and other entities – for students to attend Northeast Mississippi Community College.

--Agreed to advertise for a hearing to be held Sept. 7. on the city’s proposed Fiscal Year 2010-2011 budget.

--Approved Cook-Coggin to perform engineering services for city CDBG projects.

--Approved Jack Griffith for consulting services for city CDBG projects.

--Approved Kathi Watson attending the Municipal Court Clerks Fall seminar in Choctaw.

--Heard a financial report from Charles Davis of Lindsey, Davis and Associates.
