All 10 county VFDS stayed busy as storms raged

TIPPAH COUNTY – All 10 of Tippah’s volunteer fire departments stayed busy performing various emergency services – basically, doing whatever needed doing -- during and after last weekend’s storm.

Said County Fire Coordinator Randy Stewart this week: “I would like to thank all the fire departments for the outstanding work they did during and after the storms Saturday and Sunday.

“In addition, the sheriff of Union County and Steve Coker, who is the Union Fire Coordinator, brought people to help with road clearing and search.”

Said Tippah County Board of Supervisors president President Jimmy Gunn at a Monday morning meeting: “The volunteer firefighters did a heck of a job. I don’t know what we would have done without them. All they wanted to know was ‘what do you need us to do?’”

Before the weekend storms, and in several cases over the weekend, four of the county’s fire departments were called to fight various types of fires, according to county fire records. Capsule summaries of those calls:

--Walnut, dispatched Sunday, May 2 at 7:19 p.m., TV afire on County Road 124, returned to station 7:30 p.m.

--Ripley, dispatched Sunday, May 2 at 12:25 p.m. to Krazy Skates, switch box, returned to station 1:14 p.m.

--Ripley, dispatched Wednesday, April 28 at 9:55 p.m., house fire on County Road 564, heavy damage reported, returned to station 11:15 p.m.

--Blue Mountain, dispatched Wednesday, April 28, at 1:25 p.m. house fire on County Road 700, house destroyed by fire, returned to station 4:24 p.m. A story about this fire appeared in the May 1 issue of this newspaper.

--Mitchell, dispatched Monday, April 26, at 2:32 p.m. to Hankins, Inc., on Miss. 4, planer on fire, returned to station 4:39 p.m.
