Community theater is alive and well in Ripley. And we're all the better for it.

Li'l Abner - featuring Al Capp's world famous characters - has come to Ripley. The upbeat musical extravaganza stages in Ripley at the Dixie Theater July 23, 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. and a matinee Sunday July 26.

Third in the Ripley Arts Council 2009 season the musical play is a satisfying mixture of hillbilly nonsense and sharp, critical humor that appeals to sophisticated theatergoers as well as the child within us all.

Company co-directors for the performance are Erin Kukendall and Scottie Wilkerson. Dees Oil Company is sponsoring the run. Lead roles for the Broadway hit include: Abner Yokum, Jonathan Nabors, Daisy Mae Scragg, Anna Cagle; Mammy Yokum, Susan Butler, Pappy Yokum, Larry Tutor, Earthquake, Aaron Presley, Marryin' Sam, Phil Wilson; General Bullmoose, Nolan Hill, and Dr. Finsdale, Lee Hill.

These folks have worked hard, and they've done a stellar job, if advance veiwings of the play are any indication.

Find out for yourself.
