North Tippah and South Tippah students began school Monday of this week.

That means large yellow schoool buses are once again on city and county roads, carrying hundreds of youngsters to and from schools across the county.

Be watchful, be cautious and slow down around the busses. And never, ever pass a stopped school bus that has its flashers on and brake signs out.

Along a related line parents should take a few minutes to “busproof” their youngsters. Children naturally think of school buses as big friendly creatures, driven by someone they know, filled with their friends.

Parents should teach their youngsters to be careful around buses, to walk away from them quickly after exiting, or to stay on the sidewalk out of the street until the bus pulls away.

Our school bus drivers are about the safest group of drivers around. They’ve been tested and certified to drive the buses. The drivers’ collective safety record is outstanding We don‘t remember the last time a school bus was involved in a serious crash in these parts.

Don’t be the car or truck driver who causes a wreck because you were in too much of a hurry to stop, look and listen.

Give the kids a brake…
